Archive for November, 2008

The Geology department at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown (UPJ) has gone through a number of changes over the past year, but probably the most drastic is the overturn of the full-time faculty.   As of August 2008, the UPJ geology full-time faculty is comprised of three young, female scientists.   Each of us covers a different aspect of geology and in the near future all of us will introduce ourselves (I’ll hit my own summary in the next post).

We’ve decided to start this blog for several reasons:

  1. Higher visibility of what we’re doing
  2. Encourage our upper level students to feel more comfortable about writing about geology in a general setting
  3. Give both our students and ourselves a forum to talk about various things going on in geology
  4. To include the richness of the geoblogosphere into our program

Starting with the spring semester, we will have at least one upper level class actively participating in the blog and contributing their own posts on a weekly basis.   Up at bat for Spring 2009 will be Geology 1108 Report Writing & Computer Applications in Geology, who will start blogging in January.   Until then, I will be setting up the blog and encouraging Carrie & Katrin to introduce themselves.
