Fairly new technologies have been used in growing diamonds instead of mining them, which is cheaper in the long run. Scientists take a core made of graphite, carbon, and a diamond seed and put in into a machine that is like a pressure cooker. The machine is 1,500 degrees and pressure is equal to 850,000 pounds per square inch. Each carbon atom attach to the seed, forming a diamond crystal. The process takes about 4 days, and there are about 500 variables that go into the process, so each diamond doesn’t always turn out perfectly.
