In hand sample coal is a black rock, but in thin section under a trasnsmitted light microscope. The wood material that is preserved in the coal is red and the yellow distorted rings are spores from the plants, the yellow-orange material is algal material, the charcoal is black and the white spots are transparent minerals. The materials that are preserved such as the spores are elongated due to pressures from burial.
