There are quite a few geology-related KMZ/KML files out there for Google Earth. For this week, I would like to suggest that each student cruise the internet and find at least one geology KMZ/KML file. For each:
- post a link to where people can download the KMZ/KML
- give a brief description of what’s present when you open the file in Google Earth
- explain why this specific information would be useful for geology students
Oh, and if you haven’t download Google Earth v. 5 this would be a great time to do so!
Since I’m going to be teaching Earthquakes & Volcanoes in the fall, my addition to the fray is going to be Smithsonian Institute Global Volcanism Program’s KMZ that includes all of the Holocene-aged volcanoes in their database. The layer includes geographic information, links back to the Global Volcanism Program pages, and any other links to information about real-time monitoring of the volcano. I think the database will help the students get a better handle of the regional distribution of volcanoes around the world (especially if I overlay the plates KMZ as well
