Why Geology well oddly enough i get asked that question a good bit, mostly from friends and family friends who you randomly bump into from time to time. Well the truth is from when i was little i wanted to be a magician or a professional stuntman (or maybe even some odd combination of the two). Obviously once reality hit i began the thought process on what i would like to do for the rest of my life. As most of us can probably relate too when i was in high school i had absolutely no idea what i wanted to do for a career let alone major in in college.
That being said i did a little more thinking researching websites, taking those ridiculous “what are your interests” quiz’s which are supposedly geared to help people realize what they would like to do as a possible career, and still nothing. It was then that i remembered that my uncle was a geologist (interestingly enough a UPJ geology graduate) and i said to myself what the heck is a geologist and what do they do? As college inched and inched closer i remember talking with him about his likes, dislikes, experiences, and regrets and decided i would give it a try for it was very interesting to me.
And so there i was a freshman in college majoring in geology knowing not a single thing about the science (merely thriving off my curiosity and interest). It was after my first semester at Clarion University when i realized that maybe geology was simply an interest of mine rather than a potential career, and so i changed majors to chemistry. That lasted a whole 2 weeks and as a freshman undergoing a “major” crisis i had no idea what to do. After talking with advisors, family, and friends, i decided to undertake biology with a strong intention in attending medical school. I seemed to fit as a biology student with heavy interest in laboratory work, human anatomy, ecology, etc. And so i stayed a bilogy major for 3 semesters to be exact a considerable chunk in my college career.
However, as one who tends to think into things to much i inevitably began to think about my life as a biologist and/or doctor. It was definitely cool to see myself as a doctor helping people, making good money, also trying to be ever so much like HOUSE. I was happy and content until one of the most important things in my life (baseball) came into the picture. Life at Clarion was good but not for me. Grant it i did have fun but something wasn’t right whether it stemed from baseball or academics or the distance from home (not sure). But needless to say the summer of 2007 i decided to come home for various reasons which now i cannot be more happy i made. It also came at a time where finally realized that biology wasn’t for me, after 3 semesters of classes and research i really didn’t like it, i didn’t like blood or needles (staples needed i think to become a good doctor).
And so i came back home to my hometown to UPJ again in search of a major, and to be honest i missed geology i missed the rocks, the dynamic earth, the science i still really did not know much about other than my few memories of physical geology at Clarion. I don’t know what it specifically was that made me choose it, i kind of just felt at home. I mean how many careers can you enjoy the great outdoors, science, and even labwork all at once. I’m glad i made the transition from both Clarion and biology to a proud UPJ geology student. THE FEW THE PROUD THE SCHIST (corny, well maybe).
